“Lagos Makoko Housing”

Project two background RES and reflection

1.Client Research: For this housing reconstruction project, I targeted the Makoko Slum families in Lagos Nigeria (Especially the elders and the ones that need to take responsibilities of their massive families. According to CNN news, there are 25 thousands residents and more than three thousand families living in the slum areas. About 60-70 percent of the Lagos population are the large families living in Slum Areas.

Without birth controls, Lago’s slum population grows massively, leading to terrible city expansion. Another problem with Lagos is that the area is extremely vulnerable to sea level rises and flood, in which makes it very difficult for the Lagos government to even care or protect these slums. Makoko was originally a fishing village located at the lagoon of Atlantic Ocean but was illegally built into an one square kilometer urban settlement. This means that every family only have thirty three meter squared spaces to live. The average size of Makoko’s family is about seven to ten people—each person only have four meter squared living spaces. The slum families living in Makoko also lack access to clean water. Although the Lagos government established the regeneration plan recently promising to help improve the Makoko families’ living standards, the plans they have is unpractical.The government do not seem like they want to help the slums because the reconstruction takes a lot of money and time. I collected the datas from different news’ official websites and then I did a lot of math to get the average living space datas. With the resulted datas in mind, I decided to create a housing reconstruction project to try and solve the current issues Lagos Makoko has. The research overall provided me with useful accurate datas, supporting me in the following design process.
